Sonorant Ensemble is a group of adventurous amateur singers based in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, brought together by a shared love of inventive vocal music. Under the artistic direction of Miguel Ángel Santaella, we explore fresh repertoire, daring arrangements, and new ways of shaping sound together.

We do not treat concerts as background music. We build programmes that travel, twist, surprise, and tell stories. Sometimes that means early music. Sometimes it means brand-new work. Sometimes it means a familiar tune turned inside out in a way you never saw coming.

Why Sonorant?

Because sound matters — not just the notes, but the shimmer, the pulse, the blend, the edge, the breath before a phrase begins. We are drawn to music with character, contrast, and courage.

Every project is an invitation: to listen differently, sing bravely, and step into a musical world that feels alive, playful, and a little unexpected.

Where we began

Our first programme in 2025 brought together short works from different composers, eras, and languages, including music by Thomas Tallis and Raymond Schroyen, alongside world premieres. 
We performed this programme at the De Watergeus Choir Festival in Brielle and at our season-closing concert in Alblasserdam, where audiences responded warmly. 

That first season set the tone for who we are: curious, stylistically open, and excited by contrasts. Old and new. Familiar and fresh. Precision and adventure.

What’s next

For the 2026–2027 season, we are preparing a vibrant a cappella programme of well-known pop, folk, jazz, and world music melodies in exclusive arrangements made especially for the ensemble.

Expect music with groove, colour, heart, and a few delicious surprises. Think recognisable songs, reimagined with vocal texture, imagination, and Sonorant character.
